New Advent Calendar – I’m So Excited!!!

Okay, so four years ago I created my very first homemade advent calendar using cardboard, paper and magazine cut-outs and I was pretty proud of myself and we have enjoyed using it! But it was starting to getting a little weary and dusty and worn out and I was itching to do something different this year. I started perusing Pinterest for inspiration with the following criteria in mind:

  1. Inexpensive
  2. Easy to make
  3. Not going to take up too much space in my house or in storage throughout the year
  4. Somewhat sturdy and not going to get wrecked too easily
  5. Able to hold a few small candies for each day
  6. Cute

Well, I feel like I found everything I was looking for and I think it turned out so stinkin’ adorable!!! I went to the dollar store to see what little boxes, jars, etc. I could find where I could affordably (made up word) get 24 of them and found these cute little white buckets that are apparently used for party favors.

I remembered seeing a few ideas on Pinterest with exactly these buckets, so I went back to see what I could use them for. I didn’t feel like building (or rather, asking my husband to build) anything with hooks to hang them on or trying to figure out a way to string them up on a wall or something, so when I saw how one person had simply hung them on their Christmas tree as ornaments, that was the perfect solution for me!

I then got super excited when I thought about the most wonderful use for the printable Truth in the Tinsel ornaments!! I printed them extra small by using my PDF program to print all four pages of ornaments onto just one piece of paper, so that they ended up being about 35mm in size. I then bought some fun Christmas-themed scrapbook paper and glued the ornaments onto the back side.

I cut them all out, got the kids to help me color them, then printed the numbers for the days on white card stock within slightly smaller circles (about 25mm), cut those out and glued them on top of the scrapbook paper. I then punched a small hole with a safety pin in the top hanging part of the paper ornament and carefully punched the handle from my bucket through the hole to create these adorable little advent tags!!! I love how they turned out and think they are so cute! I then put a few candies in red tissue paper and stuffed them in the buckets. :)

So the plan is, each day we will take our bucket off the tree (which I’m still very patiently waiting for my husband to come home from his ministry trip so he can put it up for me), look on the backside of the tag for our advent Truth in the Tinsel clue, get our candies, read the devotional, do our Lego activity, and then replace the bucket with our crafty tree ornaments from the first year we did Truth in the Tinsel. Yay!!!

I think this will look really cute on our tree and I’m glad it won’t take up a lot of space in storage and will be easy to reuse again in the years to come until I get bored and find something else to create. :) It only cost me $15 for the buckets and about $10 for the scrapbook paper and white card stock, but you could probably easily use other materials you find at home, like wrapping paper or old Christmas cards or something. It was a little time consuming to do all the cutting and coloring and gluing, but I’m very happy with how they turned out and that I found another great use for the Truth in the Tinsel printable ornaments! :)
