Review & Giveaway: Roots for the Journey

I recently heard about mom, author, speaker, songwriter and music artist Yancy, who has written and recorded several worship projects and devotionals for kids and adults alike. Her latest project “Roots for the Journey“* started off as a lullaby album for kids, but became much more and is a truly beautiful and simple compilation of songs based on the Word of God that teach kids important truths about God and themselves, but which is a great worship album for adults too (hear Yancy talk about the album here).

What really drew me to this project, though, was that Yancy has also created a free app to go with the album that helps you as a family to get all you can get from these songs! I love tools that help me engage my kids in the Word of God and especially when it involves music! :)

My favorite song on the album thus far is “Creator“, which is based on Psalm 139 and Jeremiah 29:11 and is all about how God knit them together in their mother’s womb, how they are fearfully and wonderfully made, and how God has a plan and a purpose for their lives. My favorite line in the song, though, is actually where she writes “You know my favorite color and what I like to play with. You know each freckle and all my silly faces…You know my fears and struggles, still You love me the same.” I love how it made it personal for my kids and something they could connect with.

But it gets better! Not only do my kids really enjoy listening to the “Roots for the Journey“* album, but the app is loaded with resources to help you go deeper. You can listen to the song, read the lyrics, watch a video about the song, read the scripture that inspired the song, read a devotional that helps explain some of the truths to your kids, use the discussion questions to get your kids to think, do a fun activity together, and even pray a prayer with them about it! I’ve only gone through these for the song “Creator” so far, and the kids had a great time, and there’s still so much to explore with the other songs, music videos, and articles for parents.

We had the CD playing while they made things with playdough, talking the whole time about the creations they were making, how God created them, and how they can bring God glory through the special gifts He’s given them – so good!
